Admission to Czechia from Kazakhstan: the route and its deadlines

There is no single application deadline in Czechia: each university sets its own and must publish it in advance. Every date of the route, up to enrolment.

Published:

There is no single Czechia-wide deadline for filing documents with a university: the deadline is set by each university or faculty itself, and it is obliged to publish it in advance, at least four months ahead, together with the admission conditions and the form of the exam (§ 49(5) of Act No. 111/1998 Sb., Verified: 2026-09-18). At Masarykova univerzita in Brno the application window for the 2027/2028 academic year is open from 1 November 2026 to 28 February 2027 (MUNI, deadlines, Verified: 2026-09-18). For an applicant from Kazakhstan what matters is not that window itself, but the fact that recognition of the school certificate and registration at the embassy run on deadlines of their own, and they start earlier.

The short answer: count backwards from the date of enrolment

The route is made of four tracks, and they do not queue up one after another, they overlap. The application to the university, recognition of the certificate, the entrance test and the residence permit each have their own deadlines, each has its own keeper, and only one of them is set by the student. What usually breaks the route is not the exam but the recognition document failing to arrive in time for enrolment.

When the application is filed and what it costs

The admission procedure starts when the application is delivered to the university or faculty that runs the programme, not to the university in general (§ 50(1), Verified: 2026-09-18). So there can be several applications, and each one is filed and paid for separately. Which public universities Czechia has and which cities they sit in: universities in Czechia.

The act caps the admission procedure fee at twenty percent of the ministerial base, that is 1 055.60 CZK for an academic year starting in 2026, with the base at 5 278 CZK (§ 58(1) and § 58(2), Verified: 2026-09-18). The cap has a boundary of its own: § 58(4) does not extend it to programmes taught in a foreign language, where the university sets the admission fee freely. For Czech-taught programmes the real amounts sit below the cap: at MUNI they run from 450 CZK at the faculty of social studies to 950 CZK at the faculty of pharmacy, with most faculties at 800-900 CZK (MUNI, frequently asked questions, Verified: 2026-09-18). A fee not paid on time means the application is treated as withdrawn, and that is § 58(1) itself, not the practice of one university.

What exactly the university has to publish in advance: the deadline and the manner of filing, the admission conditions, the date and the manner of checking them, and where there is an exam its form, its framework content and the marking criteria, plus the maximum number of students to be admitted. All of it sits in the public part of the university’s site, and that is the source the dates are checked against, not last year’s articles.

Recognition of the certificate starts earlier than it looks

A Kazakhstani school certificate has to be proved before enrolment, and this track carries the earliest deadlines on the whole route. In the 2026/2027 cycle the Přírodovědecká fakulta of MUNI accepted documents until 7 June 2026, MFF UK until 31 July 2026 by paper post, and ČVUT until 21 August 2026 and no later than 30 days before enrolment. That is earlier than the academic year starts, and usually earlier than a family gets to the visa.

There are two recognition routes: a decision of the krajský úřad for 3 000 CZK, or an assessment by the university itself inside admissions, for at most 1 055.60 CZK. The first has a base term of 30 days and up to 60 in complex cases, but 60 days cannot be treated as a ceiling: the time for enquiries, for expert opinions and for the delivery of documents from abroad has no upper limit, and a nostrification exam once set stops the clock. How the two work and which to choose is covered by a separate text: certificate nostrification in Czechia.

Counting on bringing the document in after enrolment does not work. The act allows conditional enrolment without proof of the previous education only under a declared extraordinary school regime, and the Lex Ukrajina relaxations apply to holders of temporary protection. For an applicant from Kazakhstan in ordinary times neither exception is available, so the proof has to be ready for enrolment, and the policy of a particular faculty is checked with that faculty.

The exam: a rule, not a duty

The admission conditions are checked, as a rule, by an entrance exam (§ 49(4), Verified: 2026-09-18). The wording of the act matters: “as a rule” means that admission without an entrance exam is lawful where the faculty has decided so and has published it.

The tests are not lined up neatly after the applications close. At MUNI the first of the two blocks of the study aptitude test runs from 29 November 2026 to 14 February 2027, that is inside the application window, which closes only on 28 February. Subject tests are set separately: at the faculty of science on 17 April 2027, and at the faculty of medicine on 9 or 10 June 2027 for the long Master’s programmes in general medicine and dentistry.

One detail is worth noticing early, because it changes the travel budget. The MUNI test is taken in electronic form, but in person: “Test budeš vyplňovat v elektronické podobě. Bude to ale prezenčně v prostorách MUNI, nikoli online z domova”, the test is filled in electronically, but on MUNI premises, not online from home (MUNI, entrance exams, Verified: 2026-09-18). The first block runs only in Brno; the second adds Prague, Hradec Králové, Jihlava, Olomouc, Zlín, Ostrava, Bratislava and Žilina. For an applicant from Kazakhstan that means a physical trip, and it goes into the calendar together with the visa to enter. The external SCIO tests run seven times per cycle from December to May, some of the sittings online, and it is possible to register for them before the application to the university is filed. What the exams are, what NSZ is and where admission without exams really works: entrance exams at Czech universities.

The admission decision is issued within 30 days of the day the conditions are checked (§ 50(4), Verified: 2026-09-18). There is an appeal, but a narrow one: an odvolání is decided by the rector, and he checks only whether the decision and the procedure match the act, the university’s internal rules and the published admission conditions. Marks cannot be recounted on the merits through an odvolání.

The visa: the track the student does not control

A student at a Czech university files not for a long-term visa but for a long-term residence permit for the purpose of study. Only a Czech educational institution can register the student for submission at the Czech embassy in Astana, the embassy gave the average wait for a slot as 21-30 days as of 28 July 2026, and the statutory time limit for the decision is 60 days from the day the complete set is filed. This whole stretch is covered by student visa to Czechia.

Two things follow for the calendar. First: the wait for the slot plus the 60 days for the decision have to fit between enrolment and the first day of classes, and the student can influence neither. Second: submission needs a confirmed amount in the account, 115 810 CZK for a year of stay, and the amounts rest on a nařízení in force until 30 September 2026, so for a later submission they are recalculated from scratch.

When the academic year starts

The act carries no Czechia-wide date for the start of the academic year: the academic year lasts 12 calendar months, and its start is set by the rector of the particular university (§ 52(2), Verified: 2026-09-18). That differs from Poland, where 1 October is fixed by statute, and it means the date of the first day of classes is looked up in the timetable of the chosen university.

A separate and much earlier date belongs to anyone going through the preparatory year. For the one-year course at the University of West Bohemia for 2026/2027 the application deadline for applicants from countries outside the EU was 31 March 2026, against 31 July for EU applicants, four months earlier. The conditions and the prices of that route: free study in Czechia and the preparatory year.

The language is checked inside the conditions of the programme, not in separate proceedings. There is no single national threshold: the official Study in Czechia portal writes that many Czech-taught programmes require at least level B2, while the medical faculties of Charles University require a certified C1 (Study in Czechia, Verified: 2026-09-18).

What the whole route costs

Study in Czech at public and state universities carries no tuition fee, but the route to it is made of paid steps: the fee for each application, recognition of the certificate, translations with an apostille, the visa fee, the preparatory year where it is needed, and living in the country. The full breakdown with the amounts: what studying in Czechia costs.

The Czech destination as a whole, with the universities and the support package: Czechia. A comparison with the two other routes, when the country is not chosen yet: Poland, Czechia or Italy. Putting the documents together for the date the university asks the embassy for is what visa support is for, and recognition of the certificate is handled by nostrification.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers on this topic. The full list of questions lives on a separate page.

01When do you have to file documents for admission to Czechia?

There is no single date: the deadline is set by each university or faculty, and it must be published at least four months in advance together with the admission conditions. At Masarykova univerzita the window for the 2027/2028 academic year is open from 1 November 2026 to 28 February 2027. But the planning starts from an earlier date: in the 2026/2027 cycle the faculty deadlines for proving the certificate fell in June and August, and the preparatory year closed its intake for non-EU applicants back in March.

02What does it cost to apply to a Czech university?

For Czech-taught programmes, the act caps the fee at twenty percent of the ministerial base, that is 1 055.60 CZK for a year starting in 2026. The real amounts are lower: at MUNI from 450 to 950 CZK depending on the faculty. Each application is paid for separately, and a fee not paid on time means the application is treated as withdrawn.

03Does nostrification have to be done before the application is filed?

Not necessarily before the application, but necessarily before enrolment, and universities have document deadlines of their own that fall noticeably earlier than the start of studies. Some faculties assess the education themselves inside admissions, and then a separate krajský úřad decision is not needed. Counting on bringing the document in after enrolment does not work: the act allows conditional enrolment only under an extraordinary school regime.

04When does the academic year start in Czechia?

There is no single statutory date. The academic year lasts 12 calendar months, and its start is set by the rector of each university, so the particular day is looked up in the timetable of the chosen university. Classes usually start in the autumn, but the act does not fix that date, unlike Poland with its 1 October.

05How long does the visa take after enrolment?

The statutory time limit for the decision is 60 days from the day the complete set is filed, and ahead of it lies the wait for the submission slot itself, which the embassy put at 21-30 days as of 28 July 2026. Only a Czech educational institution can register a student for submission, so this part of the calendar is controlled by the university, not by the family.
